Older Americans Month: How Senior Living Is Redefining Aging in New Jersey

At FellowshipLIFE, aging isn’t something to fear, it’s something to celebrate.

May is Older Americans Month, a national observance established in 1963 to recognize the contributions, resilience, and experiences of older adults. Today, it also serves an important purpose: challenging outdated stereotypes about aging and promoting independence, well-being, and vibrant living.

That mission is one we live every day across our communities.

A Vibrant Approach to Senior Living

FellowshipLIFE is a leading nonprofit organization serving older adults across New Jersey, with multiple communities designed to support independent living, assisted living, and life plan options.

Our communities include:

Each location is built around a simple but powerful idea: Aging should expand your life—not limit it.

Residents aren’t slowing down. In many cases, they’re experiencing a renewed sense of freedom.

Living Fully, Without the Burden

For many older adults, daily responsibilities like home maintenance, cooking, and upkeep can become overwhelming. At FellowshipLIFE, those burdens are lifted—creating space for something better.

Residents often share that they are:

  • More socially connected
  • More active than they’ve been in years
  • More focused on what brings them joy

Instead of worrying about the “to-do list,” they’re spending time on what truly matters—relationships, hobbies, wellness, and new experiences.

In fact, many say they’re living some of their best years yet.

Resident Stories: Aging as a New Beginning

For many of our residents, this stage of life isn’t about slowing down—it’s about making room for connection, purpose, and joy.

For Geraldine Colburn, a resident at Riverwalk Village, life’s greatest joy can be summed up in a single word: music. Whether she is listening to visiting musicians or gathering with friends, Geraldine finds that her appreciation for life has only deepened with time. For her, the secret lies in a perspective that only time can grant.

“Age is a state of mind,” Geraldine says. “If there is one thing I have learned as I get older, it is to have patience… You can’t do the things you did when you were younger, however the change is not that bad, just different and you learn a lot about yourself and other people. You see the world completely different than when you are young.”

Living at Riverwalk Village keeps her mind sharp and her social calendar full. “I enjoy daily socials and getting together with my friends and having conversations. That’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.”

At Friends Village, Katie Chrysler believes that aging gracefully is an intentional, lifelong practice. It’s a philosophy she sees reflected in the vibrant neighbors all around her every day.

“Aging well starts long before you think of yourself as aging,” Katie shares. “It’s about continuing to do the things you love for as long as possible, and when limitations arise, learning to enjoy what you still can do. A positive mental attitude makes all the difference. I see so many people here at Friends Village living that way every day. I enjoy living here, the people around me, and this stage of life.”

As a retired teacher living at Harrogate Village, Regina Sabini has traded the rigid schedules of her past career for a lifestyle defined by freedom and philanthropy. Without an alarm clock dictating her day, she has found a beautiful balance between peaceful reflection and active community impact.

“At this stage of my life, there is always something new to enjoy,” Regina says. “When people ask how community living has impacted my lifestyle, my answer is simple: our community comes together to support meaningful causes, and that spirit is truly inspiring. As involvement grows, so does the sense of love and connection. Here, you can enjoy comfort, security, and a wonderfully active lifestyle.”

These stories reflect a common theme: Aging isn’t an ending—it’s a transition into a more intentional, fulfilling way of living.

Why Older Americans Month Matters

Older Americans Month is more than a celebration—it’s a call to awareness. Across the country, older adults still face challenges such as:

  • Social isolation
  • Access to care
  • Financial uncertainty
  • Misconceptions about aging

Organizations like LeadingAge New Jersey and Delaware are working to advocate for policies, resources, and systems that better support older adults and the communities that serve them.

At FellowshipLIFE, we are proud to be part of this broader effort, supporting not only our residents, but the future of aging as a whole.

Redefining What It Means to Grow Older

Older Americans Month reminds us that aging is not a limitation—it’s an opportunity. An opportunity to:

  • Live with greater freedom
  • Build deeper connections
  • Focus on purpose and well-being
  • Experience life without the burdens of the past

At FellowshipLIFE, we see this every day. And we believe the best way to honor older adults…
is to help them live fully, confidently, and joyfully—right now.
