Flexible floor plans make transitional living easy
They were the second couple to move into their Presidential cottage home in 2007. At the time, Pat was still working full-time in New York City and liked the convenience of the home’s den that he used as an office.
“We both grew up living in apartments in New York, but loved our single-family home and property in Marlboro, NJ, once we relocated to the suburbs,” Pat explains. “Having a front porch and a manageable yard is very important to us.”
The couple elected to downsize from their larger house to Applewood before reaching a point where moving was overwhelming.
“My mother enjoyed a marvelous retirement at Applewood, so moving here was an easy choice for us,” says Pat, now retired from his career as an aviation insurance underwriter.
“We never want to be a burden to our children,” explain the Valones. Applewood’s unique Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) means they can seamlessly transition to assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing care, if ever needed, without having to uproot themselves and move during a time of stress.
The couple says their cottage home has perfectly suited their needs over the past 14 years. From an attached garage to full interior and exterior maintenance services, including housekeeping, they have time to enjoy retirement to the fullest.
“One of the reasons my mother loved Applewood so much was the constant flow of events and activities here,” Pat recalls. “I participate in many clubs and activities while Gladys is more selective, so we are both happy.”
Private garages offer space for hobbies and extra storage
In 2012, the Genthners had tired of their 55+ active adult community in Manalapan. “The house required too much ongoing maintenance and was more home than we wanted or needed at this stage of our lives,” he recalls.
They had children living in the Monmouth County area and wanted a smaller footprint but ample space for Richard’s impressive model railroad.
“After our move to Applewood in Freehold, I was delighted to discover our taxes were lower than when we lived in Manalapan,” Richard adds.
His wife Pat, who recently passed away, had eyesight challenges, so oversized windows on three sides of the cottage home offered a plethora of light, which suited her needs perfectly. They also wanted a garage to keep their car handy without having to go outside.
Former Colts Neck couple enjoy wildlife outside their front door
John and Joanne Jacoby moved to Applewood five years ago and knew the cottage home location was for them.
“Moving to a smaller home was a less stressful transition than moving directly to an apartment,” he explains. The couple, frequent walkers, appreciates the sidewalks and walking paths right outside their front door.
The couple’s adult children live nearby, so their extra bedroom is used as an office and den for reading. “If we ever need space for overnight guests, we can take advantage of the furnished guest apartments available here at Applewood.”
“We were elated the first time we discovered a family of deer in our front yard here in Freehold,” says John Jacoby. “They were daily visitors at our home in Colts Neck, so we took it as a sign we made the right decision.”
