Factors to consider when planning your summer vacation

Travel tips for seniors to enjoy their summer vacation

With summer right around the corner, now’s the best time to start making plans for a summer vacation. Locations can vary based on your interests, but whether you’re jaunting out to visit civil war battle locations or heading for the nearest beach, as we get older, there are some considerations that remain the same regardless of your destination. Try these senior travel tips to make your planning easier and your trip hassle-free.

Lodging

Unless you’re just going for a day trip, one of the first considerations for your vacation is where you’re going to stay. Whether you’re a single senior traveling on your own or going out with a group, you want to think about more than just numbers when it comes to lodging. Think about how far your accommodation is from the places you want to visit and pick a place that is convenient to access. To ensure a tranquil and calm environment, choose a location that is away from busy and noisy areas. Make a list of things you need to comfortably and safely sleep and get ready each day and ask prospective hotels how they can accommodate your needs. If it’s not clearly labeled on their website, a quick call can normally answer any remaining questions you have.

Accessibility

There are many vacation trips for seniors of all mobility and other ability levels. Doing plenty of research about your desired location will help make sure you’re not disappointed by getting there only to learn it doesn’t cater to someone with your accessibility needs. Vigorous hiking trails in our National Parks may be beyond some travelers’ abilities, but some of the most scenic spots have accommodations that let them be reached by all. If you’re planning on taking a guided tour, make sure you’re comfortable with the level of excursion that will be required to complete the tour.

Travel

Once you know where you’re going, the next step is deciding how to get there and how to get around once you’re there. Traveling by car or renting one at your destination can offer a level of flexibility that public transportation doesn’t. But if you would rather let someone else do the driving, many popular vacation spots have ample options for getting around. Ridesharing apps like Uber even include accessibility options in their app, though depending on your location, the availability may be limited. In some locations, hotels even offer shuttle services to and from the airport and popular local attractions. If you need assistance getting around the airport, check with your airline ahead of time to see if they can have a gate agent and mobility devices, like a motorized cart, available for when you arrive.

Packing

Once your itinerary is set, it’s time to pack. Make sure you have all necessary identification and paperwork, such as tickets or boarding passes, in an easy to access location like a purse or fanny pack. When you travel abroad, remember to bring your passport – and always have a copy of your passport with you wherever you go. Check the weather before going so you know what clothing and shoes to pack. If you’re planning an activity that requires special gear, such as a swimsuit or golf clubs, make sure to include them. Most importantly, if traveling by plane, pack any essentials like medication in your carry-on bag, along with spare underwear and a toothbrush, in case your luggage is lost.

Have fun!

Summer vacation is a great time to spend with family or finding a new adventure on your own. Wherever you go, you’re sure to make new memories and friends along the way. These tips can help you have a successful and safe vacation.
