How to stay active indoors during the winter

If you’re someone who loves to go for long walks or jogs, winter might feel a bit constraining. But there are still plenty of indoor exercises for seniors to keep you active and invigorated throughout the colder months. Here are four winter fitness ideas for seniors to get you started. Remember, before starting any new fitness plan, check with your medical professionals to make sure the exercise you chose is right for you.

Hit the gym

Gyms are great options for finding winter workouts for older adults. Not only do they have all the equipment that you need, they also often have personal trainers or classes. Get advice on your form or enjoy some company as you spin your way to fitness. At FellowshipLIFE’s communities, the fitness centers are just one of the many amenities to keep you active all winter long.

Go dancing

Whether you’re making use of a dancing game or going out for a night of ballroom dancing, dancing is always a fun way to burn some calories. Dancing has many health benefits, from improving your balance and strength to being gentle on your body. It also has the option of being a social activity, making it one of many great winter activities for seniors.

Swim a few laps

Swimming is always a good exercise for folks of just about any fitness level. It’s a low-impact activity, which is useful for those who may have arthritis or joint pain. Water resistance is also a great way to maintain or even increase muscle mass. There are plenty of water activities to enjoy, including swimming laps, water aerobics, water polo, and simply floating about.

Take up yoga

Yoga has been around for a long time. It’s a tried and true way to improve flexibility, balance, and mental health while also preventing cognitive decline, all of which are areas that can benefit seniors. From traditional yoga to chair yoga, there are plenty of video instructions out there if you want to try this activity in the comfort of your own home. Or you can consider joining a local yoga studio or seeing if a local gym offers classes.
